A matched study of 68,752 adults found no increase in the risk of cauda equina syndrome following chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy compared with physical therapist-led exercise.

Purpose
“Given the limited research on the topic to date, we aimed to investigate the association between SMT and CES in adults with low back disorders including disc herniation, stenosis, and/or radiculopathy.” Can SMT precipitate cauda equina syndrome? The follow-up period was 3 months.
After matching, there were 34,376 patients in both cohorts:
- Spinal manipulative therapy administered by a chiropractor
- PTE without spinal manipulative therapy
